Hmmm, I've been playing games all my life so I'm not really sure which one I beat first. My guess is that Monkey Island (for the mac) or might and magic 3 (also for the mac) was amongst the first ones, might also be some other game like sonic /sonic 2 (sega megadrive/genesis) (played them both at the sametime) though. I played/play a lot of games. But I've played a lot of unwinnable games like warlords 2 and pirates!. Since it's more about doing well. But then, I only played warlords 2 multiplayer with my older brother, I don't remember if there was a campaign for it, but I don't think so.

I forget the name of the final guy, but he was indestructible -- in all the other players/opponents, there was a trade-off between weaponry, speed, and shields; this guy had all of them cranked up to like 9.9 (I say 9.9 because I beat him by being faster than him). Grey something...? Something Grey...?

And the payoff was great -- they showed you the killing blow over and over again, slow motion, from his perspective, from my perspective, from an overhead perspective...just great.

Well, first of all I think I should mention that I played Atari 2600 games, and I could never finish any of them because they seemed to be endless :D

No in answer to you questions:

1 - Vigilante (Arcade) one of the very few arcade games I managed to ever finish :)
2 - Super Mario Brothers (NES)
3 - New Zealand Story (Master System) I could never finish this game in the arcade (could only get to the snow levels) so when I finished it at home I was well happy :D
Also can I just add Shenmue II, the end of that game is criminal, I ended up with my hand well tired, whoever designed the QTE at the end of the fight is plain evil XD

Maybe you can add which game you were never able to finish?

Mine would be Super Ghouls n Ghosts (SNES) I got to the end quite easily recently but I couldn't kill the end boss in the 2nd battle with the stupid special weapon :'(
