I want to get a new cell phone. I don't want the iPhone or whatever. I also don't want something to clip over my ear. I've never done texting but I'm going to add that to my plan, so what is better. The regular number/letter phones or the ones with a complete keyboard?
The complete keyboard ones seem like they'd be easy to use, but also seem a little bulky and maybe it isn't necessary to have a keyboard vs. number/letter pad. But, does using the number/letter thing take longer?
Opinions?

I'd say you should only get one with a keybored if you plan on texting alot. Otherwise don't bother, it's just a waste of space.

XDD
The cell phones with a keyboard are called Smart Phones. An example of this would be the Motorola Q (really good phone).
It's kind of like this, if you like to type a lot then get the smart phone. It's fun too because there's a lot of options you can do with a smart phone (depending of course on which smart phone you get).
The regular cell phones (the one with the number /letter pads) is cheap but is more for people who want to talk on the phone rather than texting. Not saying you can text, but it's a bit more slower if you've never done it before.
I have the regular cell phone for quite a while (I think a year or two now?) and I still look at the numbers to see if I'm texting right, but I'm faster than before. :3
So yeah, I would definitely recommend a Smart Phone. But also keep in mind that it's a bit fatter than a regualr cell phone and a bit more expensive.

Well what I meant to say is that I thought you didn't "converse" or communicate with a lot of people irl.
But that's beside the point.
Ok, SOME people are good with the regular cell phone texting while others would prefer the smart phones. :/

If the people who used the Smart Phone were really smart, they'd know it would be alot easier, and probably cheaper to just call up the person and talk to them.

No, no. It's the phone that's smart, so the user doesn't have to be.
That said, for me it's both easier and cheaper to text someone. No bother with them not hearing the phone or whatever, you can write what needs said and not bother with the necessary small talk, and of course I get free texts.

But texting is like e-mailing, only the person will get it quicker since they typically always have their phone handy but aren't always online.

I only text sometimes. Mostly cause for me it's like 10 cents per message. Plus, depending on the for you have (which for me is a Samsung U410) can take forever just to have a simple conversation.

I actually hate talking on the phone, I'll IM or txt someone over calling them given the choice lol. So I'd go with a smart phone :)
Of course if you're just going to send a text here and there, not all the time. Get a regular phone, WAY cheaper.
That being said, I know you didn't want an over the ear bluetooth head set, but I have to tell you that they're awesome. I don't even like talking on the phone, but when I do, having one makes it way easier. I can actually do stuff while talking now.

Yeah, but they make you look like a right tool if you use them in public. D'ya really want folk to think that of ya?

In true American form, I don''t care what people think of me? BWAHAHA
But seriously, I of course don't use it in stores or anything, that's rude. But if I'm in my car, or doing something at my home and need my hands, its WAY convenient.

I've never used bluetooth before. I see a lot of people using them in public. It's funny cause from a distance they look like crazy people talking to themselves, until I get closer and see they're wearing a headset.

LOL. Only business people and those who constantly talk on the phone non stop need a blue tooth. Honestly, why get one if you only talk with a few people on the phone a day for say 10 minutes. It's not really worth it.
Bah, oh and btw, the Motorola Q allows you to store video files into your cell phone. So you can take tons of anime with you everywhere! ;3

You can get a good el-cheapo Nokia for £20 that let's you store video, throw in a several-gig SD card and you're sorted.
I assume most phones can do that...

Well, I meant not all phones would let you store video into the cell, especially not for a cheap price.
So, yes that's what I'm saying. :/
Sure you can still get cool phones but they're rather expensive. Well some of them.

Actually you can store video and stuff, just get those mirco SD and your good.
I advise getting one that is sort of like a hybird phone. Like This (http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=2951). It's a flip phone that looks like a normal keyboard-less phone until you flip it both vertically and horizontally.

i hear those razors have terrible reception.I have a razr and it gets way better reception than the POC LG i have. I don't know which razr it is. I went into the store and said i didn't have my old phone anymore and what should i do. They pointed out the cheapest phone they had which was like $150 and I said no way. So the guy gave me a free razr. LOL. Someone else had turned it in when they upgraded or something and he said they donate them anyway, so he told me to come back in a day so he could clean it all up and I did and got a free phone. :) Not even a scratch on it.
That was last summer. Now I wanna get a new phone that will be easy for me to text on when I renew my contract to get unlimited texts.
eh' I am brekaing down and talking my p[arents into getting me a cellphone, since I will be doing a lot of biking and spelunking this summer...

You do not know what you're talking about. I suggest you go away before you make yourself look like even more of an idiot.
I was making a joke... and bluetooth sucks, they are known for being unsafe.
Security giant Symantec Corporation has cautioned users of the possible dangers of using Bluetooth-enabled devices. Users of these devices are susceptible to several attacks such as Bluespamming (sending spam to a Bluetooth enabled device, Bluejacking (sending a message from your Bluetooth enabled device PDA to a stranger who also has a Bluetooth enabled device. It can also be used to flirt with someone or play a practical joke), BlueSnarfing (copy address information like business card data from a person's Bluetooth phone in the vicinity) and BlueBugging (this vulnerability allows the hacker to initiate phone calls, send and read SMS, read and write phonebook contacts, eavesdrop on phone conversations, and connect to the internet)
However, Symantec noted that Bluespamming does have a low-level security risk. Blusnarfing is also quite dangerous as it could allow attackers to sneak into an unfortunate user’s phone and scan through the data.
Bluebugging, according to Symantec is the biggest threat, where hackers can remotely control a handset while making calls without permission.

Ah yes, that old chestnut.
Yeah, we've made programs that can hack a bluetooth signal. Most of them don't work unless the user's stupid enough to install unsigned software on their device, or if the parties involve actually enter their pairing keys while it's being monitored. Even the algorhythms for decrypting keys are useless if the key isn't typed in its presense.
And most of these problems have been fixed with newer bluetooth implementations. Bluetooth 3.x will soon make the problems even more negligible.
Keep with the times, and don't trust anything Symantec says without researching it. They're not the brightest.

I repeat: grabbing all those things requires certain circumstances which are highly unlikely to occur. Security may be an area you're interested in, but it's an area that I'm actively in formal education for. I have done these things. I have met people who spend their lives finding security holes. I have read the bluetooth technical specifications. I am calling your bluff, do you have a problem with that?
And for the record, my hat's decidedly grey. ;)

Fine fine. Now do me a favour and don't call it cracking. Black-hat hacking if you must, but.

FYI paul, the thread is about what is a better phone to get to use for TEXTING - a regular phone or the ones that have the full keyboard.
that's what I am talking about XD...
I want to get one with tecting, but I was set on getting the kantana cell... but I havn't seen any latly and they arn't much good on texting.

You were? Okay then.
I'm going shopping this weekend for the cell. It's seeming like the full keyboard might be more cumbersome than it's worth when using as a phone.
yeah and if I am going to be loaded with gear... I should get something small... probaly voice to text adon?
I use a dedicated texter for texting. It's actually quite cool, and smaller than a phone becasue it doesn't have all the stuff for phoning.

04-01-2008, 08:17 PM
yeah but surely it's a little annoying having to have that and a seperate phone for texting?
You misunderstand: it doesn't need a phone. It's a dedicated text device. A phone with out the phone, in effect.

Oh, I see. I don't need a phone, so it's easier just having the texter.
