According to AnimeNewsNetwork.com (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-01-09/newtype-usa-to-cease-publication), NewType USA has decided to cease publishing their magazine with their last issue being in February. According to ADV’s exchanges with their advertisers, ADV is planning a new magazine. I wonder what it could be about... Sad day for anime in the states. :(

Ugh, that sucks. >_<;
Hopefully the new one still has CG tutorials in the back like Newtype has sometimes. Bah. (and a DVD of upcoming stuff)

At least it is getting replaced with something else and if it is the same makers, then I'm sure the aspects that were popular will be included in their new magazine.

Those were two of Newtype USA's features that I regularly looked forward to. I learned several techniques through those tutorials and discovered anime to watch that I didn't know about through the DVD. I agree I hope they continue both into the new magazine.

Like that will happen.

Never actually read Newtype. They usually contained information I already knew or features shows that I'd seen years back, so it was kind of pointless to me. Not to mention, Newtype was expensive!
Well, it's good that they're replacing it, I guess.

D: WHAT?! NOOOOOOOO! My fave mag. T___T Hopefully they'll come back with something better (and not too much more expensive). Until then I guess I'll have to go zip out and get their last issue and start reading that Otaku USA mag (even though I personally don't like it that much).
Gah.

Subscribers will be given the option of continuing their subscription with the new magazine called PiQ at a 2 to 1 rate or receiving a prorated refund of their subscription. (The 2 to 1 rate means that you will receive PiQ for twice as long as your remaining Newtype subscription. The prorated refund means that whatever money is left in your subscription balance will be returned to you.)

I was very sad to hear this news... I only picked up like 12 issues total because of the price, but I really enjoyed the varied content. Tons of website listings... the free preview discs. The layouts were very pretty & fun to look out.
I loved that each issue had tons of reviews of upcoming manga, anime's & games. & even though ADV films was the publisher, you saw reviews from all of the other US production teams.
I have a feeling that the new PiQ magazine will focus more on the adv film releases. :(

I just read some of the stories about the end of NewType. PiQ sounds like every other magazine. I don't care about television shows & games. I got NewType for the anime information & the dvds to see if we would like the new series. I am so pissed off at ADV right now. I am going to ask for a refund Monday morning.

I am still waiting on the last issue. I can't get a refund until I receive it. I am still ticked off that they are ending the magazine. When I tried to ask questions to the customer service folks about the new magazine they didn't know anything about the magazine. I have the same problem with customer service when I call about Shonen Jump or Shojo Beat. :(
Why do so many companies hire people to answer their phones who have never even seen or used their product?

Too put it mildly... Oh this sucks... I used to buy Japanese NewType,(Can't really read J-speak, just love the art) and bought quite a few issues of it's American counterpart. I really think this is them fixing what isn't broken. Sigh......
LKK6144

I really think this is them fixing what isn't broken. Sigh......
But it *is* broken, or at least the publisher is. Newtype USA is a drain on ADV's finances in a time when ADV can ill afford unprofitable ventures. ADV has had to make several changes to its product line in an attempt to stave off financial disaster. Changing Newtype USA into the cheaper-to-produce PiQ is merely one such change in a host of changes. Other recent changes made by ADV for financial reasons: the Geneon alliance deal dissolving; suspending free disks to anime clubs; shutting down the 24-7 The Anime Network cable channel (the On Demand version is still up and running); and possibly putting a temporary hold on future DVD releases.
BurningGraphite

I see. I didn't realize that ADV had overextended themselves like that. While it's good to branch out in new directions, the company really needs to be aware of their limitations.

Well, that's a little dissapointing.
):
Though, after reading it for awhile, you realize if you have common sense and the internet, most of the stuff in Newtype becomes usless. It's, for the most part, all look-upable on the web.
Not the exact content, but stuff that's close enough.
Interviews might be the only exception.

I necro this thread only to ask if anyone else has bought the premier issue of PiQ, and if so what you think. My opinion is that I couls have spent two more dollars and bought a manga.
LKK6144
03-26-2008, 07:05 PM
I bought PiQ issue 1. The first half of the magazine reminded me of other mags like Starlog, Wizard, Cinemafantastique, and the Sci-Fi channel's monthly mag. There wasn't anything wrong with what was in the first half. But if I had wanted to read such content, I would have gotten one of those other mags and read them. (If you're curious, yes, I have bought them in the past.) The second half of PiQ is where the real anime & manga reporting kicked in. That section was more enjoyable to me since it focused on content that I was interested in. I missed not having the preview DVD. Hubby missed not having the centerfold. Am I going to buy issue 2? I don't know. It'll depend on the major stories covered. I bought Newtype USA on a fairly regular basis for the last year. I don't see myself buying PiQ as regularly as I did Newtype.

Hnnn...I saw it at Minotaurs and, not seeing a price tag, assumed it would be about 15 AUD (with shipping and all that) and decided that I might as well buy manga.
I don't know...Newtype was more expensive, yes, but it felt like money well spent to me. PiQ is a lot smaller, thinner...lacking in content? No, that's not quite right...lacking in anime/manga, compared to Newtype.

Angry rant part: still waiting on my refund. Now thats out of the way.
I will talk about PiQ. I hated the new magazine. I don't watch regular television, so that part of the magazine was a waste of time. (I only watch anime & Sci-Fi.) I was especially annoyed with the way they responded to letters from readers. They just seemed to have a bad attitude toward the Newtype readers. They could have dealt with the angry people better. The customer service people have also annoyed me. They can never answer any questions & will not give phone numbers for people who might be able to answer questions. The manga they put in was Shin Chan. I would rather of had something worth reading.
I am going to use my refund when & if I ever get it to subscribe to Otaku magazine. I think it was a much better magazine then PiQ. It had good articles & still had a dvd.

Yeah. I kind of figured as much when I couldn't find it last month after deciding to finally buy a copy. Oh well I guess I could grab some back issues online. I really miss animerica too they were my first anime mag.
But I picked up and issue of otaku instead and it seems to be ok, just not the same though. Major bummer.:(

I bought a copy of anime insider and they seem to be pretty good. They do pretty decent anime review much like the animerca reviews I remeber; full character info and some brief episode guides. Igot a free copu at WW chicago and like it then too, so I think I will pick this up as a subscription. Otaku is ok but not worth the price even with a free cd of eps and previews.

I really miss Animerica too, I can't even recall when I stopped seeing there mag around. I had gotten out ofthe habit of buying it and kept thinking I'd pick one up again but never did and now it's gone, probably forever. WHAAAAAA :(
