Is it possible to play MMORPGs on a laptop that isn't a gaming laptop without the game being laggy? I don't care about perfect graphics as much. If so what laptop? And is it under $3,000?

A "gaming laptop"'s merely one which's had some really expensive hardware capable of playing the latest and greatest.
Nyah, you should be able to run some of the older MMOs no problems on an older laptop, just make sure it has the minimum specs before you buy it.
Eh, my laptop was a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro, and the graphics card could handle Source engine games no problem, cost me about £450 ($900). Used to run Anarchy Online and Gunz: The Duel pretty sweetly, and I ran CS:S on it a few times, so I imagine the processor can cope wih that kinda thing no problem, too.
Of course concidering how old the Mthing is now, I doubt you can still, y'know, buy them.

Slightly related but a bit off topic - can anyone recommend a quiet laptop suitable for recording music, ie. no noisy fan? Windows or Mac?

Laptops tend to be about as quiet as they possibly can be fullstop...

Unless you want something that actually works. If that's the case then go Fujitsu. Always go Fujitsu.

I bought into it :)
I possess no tech-savvy whatsoever and have been scarred irreparably by past problems with PCs spontaneously combusting on me (probably all my own fault). My recent Macs haven't given me anything to complain about, though I don't do anything besides surf the net, listen to music, record music and write, occasionally =)
But I can't play games >_<

Have you seen the commercial for the new MacBook Air?

It's so thin! It starts at $1794 but more like $3,000 once you get all the extras. Not sure what those are, but that's what I heard.

Hnn....Macs confuse the hell out of me.
There's this mac I use for the VET course I take...IT HAS THE DODGIEST MOUSE. It's like this round thing with the apple icon on it...and the top half kind of pushes down and makes a clicky noise. Which is cool...BUT YOU CAN'T LEFT CLICK.
Instead, you have to hold down the control key to left click something. *swt* I don't see why apple made them. They're adorable, sure, but only for the first five seconds and they are EXPENSIVE. Like...90 bucks each.

So what the hell's "game making software" when it's at home?
Anywho, any decent laptop these days can support photoshop and 3d stuff no problem. Might want to go for something with XP rather than Vista if you get the choice, just for the lessened RAM usage that'll prove invaluable when you're using graphics packages. Not to mention that battery-draining stuff that vista on laptops comes to which is a pain to turn off if you don't know it exists...
As always, I recommend a fujitsu-siemens. Go for the one within your price range and you shouldn't have any real problems.

You evidently don't know much about Game Maker. It _does_ contain programming. It's an odd language and it's pretty limited in what it can do, but it's there. I said I think c++ is a better language.

Dell has the best laptop repair and maintenance service. They come to you and repair for free. My Compaq is worse than the several Dell's I've had, and they charge you about $60.00/month to subscribe to a support service.

well laptops are fairly good, if you have a light-load, but nothing compares to a full fledge pc... I am currently rebuilding a laptop that died do to heat... it's the fifth lappie I had to fix this year for friends and family... and on a side note...saw mentions of macs and windows...
windows is buggy, mac is becoming increasingly sloppy in their coding, more and more people are switiching back to windows, because of fears of people attacking mac... but that's just the pot calling the kettle black...

Also: Paul doesn't know what he's talking about!
-_- do not insult me, I actually do know what Iam talking about... MAc has been coming under attack more and more, since they do not have some security programs.... People do tend to back-track to windows....
and on the laptop bit, they are weak compared to a regular pc or mac setup...

lol Naw I'm not sure what I want at the moment but I don't think I'll need anything super fancy since all I do would be internet, emails, iTunes, Photoshop, Smart Draw, Office, and watching DVD's. Maybe later on if I get back into songwriting I might record on the thing so maybe something with a good soundcard. I do not play PC games at all so that's not an issue.
