View Full Version : The Not-So-Well-Known/Ye Olde Anime-Style Games Thread

I've decided to do this little thread so I (and you, yes, you) can put in your comments about any games from yesteryear (or some that you feel require more attention).
I'll start with a game on the PS2 called Crimson Tears.
I picked this up for a fiver, and it was a game I had been mindful of checking out because of screenshots of cel-shaded protagonists. You play three gene-engineered bio-weapons, who find themselves investigating an arms manufacturer who may be responsible for an accident that has paralysed Tokyo.
The characters gain experience in dungeons by dispatching enemies beat-em-up style, then level-up in a way akin to an RPG. Stringing combos together can give you experience bonuses, and finding weapons along the way can help you take them out. The weapons you can use depend on the character you choose, and you can use dual swords/guns on a particular hero/heroine.
You also have access to healing/coolant items (because bio-weapons overheat, and are powered-up if they do so at the expense of constant energy loss), and can either get these from the enemies or from the shops (which themselves can be upgraded with a few donations to an old fella).
Boss battles are a worthy affair, almost always requiring a good effort to defeat them. The best idea of the game comes if a character ends up losing their energy; if they do, you can opt to save them with another character.
I have played through quite a bit of the game so far, and although I haven't finished it, it is quite good so far. At the price I got it for, I would recommend it. :)

Legend of the Mystical Ninja/Ganbare Goemon! Series released by Konami primarily for Nintendo oriented game systems.
The only ones to be released here were 1 for SNES, and 2 for N64, but there were at least 2 for NES, 3 or 4 more for SNES, one for PS and now one for DS released in Japan.
It's a GREAT series of games and the standard by which all platform games should be judged. I still play it all the time.

Don't know about Decent, but I certainly remember Descent. I remember the motion sickness and the horrible difficulty escaping after blowing up the generators...
Anywho, Ghouls and Ghosts definately deserves a mention. I used to play the sega version all the time, and wasted waay too much cash on the arcade version. It's a rock-hard Japanese side-scroller that requires you to play through not once but twice before you can win.

Valis! Anyone remember Valis?
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1475/titlevalis7cj.jpg
Valis was a hellaciously addictive platformer title back in the olden days. It was unique for most platformers because it had a developing story that actually took some twists and turns. And the US release of the first game was rife with mistranlations. :D
It was the kind of game you would find yourself dreaming up-- a schoolgirl finds herself transported to another world where she gains awesome powers and hacks up crap.

Sadly, after Valis IV(the second in the series to arrive in the US), the series was suddenly killed off. A shame, too, since as both an anime and a game it would do quite well right now.

Like -sensei says, awesome games.
I'm still trying to find a copy of the N64 game. A local shop had the one SNES game that was released here awhile back, but I never picked it up.
Once I have some more money, I think I'll be importing the new DS game. It looks awesome.

I have it, but it's really hard. I'm kind of stuck right now, but definately worth it.
I have played the first N64 game, which was OK. I've heard lots of people say the 2nd was better, which piques my interest, but I've never played it.

I loved the first N64 game. I rented the game once, and didn't realize it needed a memory card, so I played through 3/4 of the game straight without saving. T-T
I then bought a memory card and rented it a second time, and played through and finished it in a weekend. Such an awesome game.
I never palyed the second one for the N64, but I heard the complete opposite, that it wasn't as good as the first. Maybe I'll have to keep my eyes open for it.
And do you mean to say you have the SNES game, or the DS game?

I like to use a mixture. It'd be nice to have animated cartoon ones.
