View Full Version : Want to spend less on those snacks?

No, you don't have to buy less, but you can opt to go to an Oriental Supermarket/Store instead of Suncoast or something Mainstream and western. You can get pocky for as low as 50 cents a box and other sugary treats for 30 percent of the normal prices in Suncoast. Instead of that warm bottle of Sangria, get a cold one. [x

I laugh at those who have access to places like Asian Ranch Market 99, but don't use them. I wish the one near me would carry Asse Chocolate, or Kancho Candy.

We have a Laos store almost directly across the street from our school.
We spend lunch sneaking over there from time to time to get something.
I hate this closed-campus policy in Florida.

Sadly Pennsylvania is at a lack of those Asian Supermarkets. The international food aisles are even limited...

My suncoast has cool bottles of Sangria. They are in a fridgey type thing.... (The "Fridgey" story.... (basically why I now say fridgey... Me and my BF (Michael who got tired of signing on his username all the time and so made me share... >_< Anyway we were in Suncoast and he was afraid to take a drink from the fridge they keep the drinks in because it said PEPSI on it but there were no PEPSI products and he thought he was going to get in trouble for taking something from a brand name fridge. I said "Just get the drink and lets go!" and then he was practically screaming "THE FRIDGEY WILL SEND ME TO JAIL!" the manager laughed at us and got the drink out herself... -_-)

Heh, lucky. My high school was nowhere near any such place, other than the aptly named "Thai Pot Fast Food".

Whenever my grandma visits, though, it's ramune and pocky up the arse since my mom loves pocky.

Asse Chocolate

That really doesn't sound very appetizing.

There are two or three asian markets in the area, so I laugh at all the "otaku" at my school who feel ever-so-special when they walk into school with their Suncoast-bought box of pocky and bag of candy. I tried to tell them that Han Ah Reum is only 20-25 minutes away, but they're like "But suncoast iz bettah!!!1!1one!1"

Oh god it's THAT again. What is it with you and Asse?

Please tell me you were joking about the kancho candy.

Ehrr.... Suncoast sells Asian candy? *hasn't been in a suncoast in forever...*

I don't really see the point, anyway, for 2 reasons. First off, they probably don't carry all the new limited kinds you can get at the Japanese market. (I love me some of the kinako and black sesame flavored pocky...) and secondly... well, I just feel like it's weird to have ramune at a store like that. It's not like Japanese people subsist on pocky and ramune or anything... :P

You know how you save money on them? Move to a small town with neither a Suncoast OR an asian food market anywhere! Maaaann, you all are making me hungry...I haven't had pocky or ramune or mochi in over a year! OMG I'm going through strawberry mochi withdrawl!!! TT____TT I'd order some offline, but...yeah...no money. *sighs*

Mochi is a gluttunous candy...thing...made from rice thats been pounded until it has more the texture of sticky dough (though not the taste, and when you eat it, doesn't feel like that at all either). It's really good, though I know it's a matter of tastes, since neither my mom or sister like it at all. It's pretty sweet, but usually its all a natural sweet so it's not overbearing like other sweets. And it comes in all diffrent flavors. Strawberry is just my favorite ^_^

Wow, that makes me sound like a geek... XD

mochi is just simply, sticky rice (cake). it doesnt have to be sweet. but i really like it.

real mochi is only really eaten during new years.

but candy/cake forms of it have been made popular too thats eaten all year 'round when someones got the munchies.

Or at anyone else here, for that matter.

Fake pocky? Focky?[/can'tresist]

It's hard to find, but have any of you tried mochi ice cream? I only know of two places that sell them-- Trader Joe's, and the Mikawaya shop in Little Tokyo.

It may be something called Pepero. IIRC, it's the Korean version of Pocky, and is considerably cheaper. (When visiting some friends, I saw it 3 boxes for $1.)

That does sound familiar. I'll have to organize a little trip the next time my mom has a day off.

I shop at a local store called New Tokyo. It's run by unbelievably nice japanese family. They gave my sister's japanese exchange student friend an entire series of this magazine thing for free. I shopped there and bought a lot of Pocky and a six pack Ramune for a White Day gift. Things cost about half as much as any other place I've seen.

Market City (AKA Chinatown) in Sydney fufills my needs. Milk tea, green tea, ramune, Moringa, Pocky Mens and Black Black are always on my shopping list. I spend about $20AUS everytime I go on (Inexpensive)

Last time I visited Bangkok I went to Lotus(Thai version of Wal-Mart) and grabbed a big box of Pocky(About 30 boxes of Pocky inside) for about $20AUS.

its probably "pepero", the korean version of pocky. its not "fake" pocky, its actually the only type of pocky ill eat.

much much more cheaper too.

i really like the inverted flavor ^^;;

I like pepero more than pocky, but that may have something to do with the fact that I started mooching off my friend's Korean snacks in 7th grade and didn't touch Japanese food until I got to high school.

I live in a large Asian community so one of the supermarkets are accross the street. You know how to save even at the supermarket? Get a job there lol...gives me some sort of percentage off. xD

Ahh...mochi...its my favorite...actually any sticky rice is my favorite. >< mochi ice cream is good. In fact I have some in my freezer right now..

mochi is just simply, sticky rice (cake). it doesnt have to be sweet.

It tends to taste slightly sweet anyway because it is made from glutinous rice. They have machines similar to bread machines where you just add the rice, water, and other ingredients and it makes the mochi for you.

But mochi ice cream is a gift sent down from the gods.

I prefer it when the silly otakids waste their money at Suncoast instead of invading the Asian markets. Less competition for me. Last thing I need when shopping for my Meiji fix is to have to knock aside a gaggle of squealing teenagers shrieking about zomg POCKY!!!111 while spouting off fake Japanese. :D

Not all over PA, I live in pittsburgh and we have three asian food stores (the one I frequent is Called "Lotus Foods") and you can get awesome stuff in the international food aisles most of the time. I know Wal-mart always has Pocky but I'd rather pay the 75 cents at Lotus than the 99 cents at Wal-Mart.
