So liek, what kinda transmission do you like and why? :O
Me, I despise automatic trasmissions for many reasons. One is if you can't shift a gear you shouldn't be driving. Plus I feel standards are much more fun to drive.
Discuss.

lol at the above
I like standard, when I'm in a sports car. However, when you're constantly in stop and go traffic, with a ton of overpasses and crap, an automatic is easier to deal with. I'm just lazy, lol. I currently own one standard, and two automatics.
I do like the standard, as a general rule, but I hate shifting constantly, around the city.

I love driving a stick shift! Much more zippy and fun - but a leg ache if stuck in traffic.

I learned standard when I was 15, but I wouldn't be able to drive it now even if I wanted to. :(
Which is just as well, since the Caddy Coupe de Ville is automatic. lol

I learned to drive a stick shift by my sister saying, "Go get some bread" and tossing me the keys to her car. It was a bit bumpy at first. She figured that was a good way to teach me.

lol
My LITTLE brother (by two years), the little greaser, figured maybe I'd want to drive more, since I was completely indifferent towards it, if I learned how. So then HE taught me. Crazy little punk. :biglaugh:
Still don't much care for it, truth be told. Though I DO like the occasional roadtrip. LOVE the highways at 3 in the morning, hardly anybody else on the road. :)

Standard. Much more fun to drive.
You can get those semi-automatic cars now. No clutch but you still shift gears. But only if you want to.

Semi-automatic? Do they have those in the US? Not sure how that works.

Semi-auto sounds both odd and half-@$$ed.
Not bad for learning to drive stick, maybe, but otherwise, ugh.

And I haven't a clue what "Transmission" means. Some American thing,w hich doesn't help.

On sporty cars I'll pick the manual transmission but when it comes to full sized sedans, SUVs and the such I'll go with automatic. I'm personally not a big fan of the "Sport shifters" that a lot of automatic transmissions are having now with the toggle stick. Shifter paddles on the steering wheel are a different story though. I think those are sweet.

lol, thats funny. I taught myself one weekend when my parents were away. I don't think I messed up my dad's bmw too bad.
edit: I just remembered my uncle telling me, "if you can get into first, you can get out of town". If you can get into first gear, the reat is easy.

In other words, "Do you prefer driving an auto or a manual car?"
You drive a manual(standard). Not sure if you prefer it to auto though.

Semi-automatic? Do they have those in the US? Not sure how that works. Well I know Volkswagen has that DSG transmission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox), it's kinda an automatic you can shift. BMW has one too but I dunno what it's called.

Don't drive - but if I did I would never even dream of driving an automatic. I totally agree with Cow; if you can't shift gear, don't drive. If you can shift gear and still drive an automatic you're just too ghey for words.
For those who think auto - YOU MAKE ME SAD.

I've only driven standard once and didn't know what I was doing that time. <__> I don't have enough driving experiance to choose what I like moar, but for now automatic is easier. :3

All you guys who are with standard and have a sports car probably get speeding tickets up the wazoo! I drove my dad's 5 speed Dinan BMW M3 and went racing during the summer and now I drive a 6 speed VW Golf R32. Still no tickets.
I've also had a Ducati street bike for a month and no cops have gave me a second look :3

Geesh, mostly everyone I know who drives standard gets tickets like crazy. And they don't even have a sports car!

Automatic for me. Learned the standard if emergency happen, but I really think it is painful to drive that in the traffic jam...
Blackthornhiei

Standard.
I don't really see it as a problem in traffic jams or heavy traffic. But then again, I've driven stardard since I've learned to drive.

the times I have driven an automatic, I still shift. I hate it when cars shift into 4th on surface streets. I lock it into 3rd or 2nd.

I know that standards are better, but I drive better with an automatic. :/ I have a really hard time multi-tasking, especially since I'm still pretty much a noob at driving. Plus, my brother's trying to teach me stick shift in his car, which stalls at the slightest wrong thing you do which is obnoxious. My sister's pretty good at driving stick, but it was hilarious to see her try to drive my brother's car around. She kept stalling it in all the intersections. I thought we were gonna die. XD
Maybe I'll like Stick once I get better at driving and/or if I get to drive a decent one that doesn't stall all the time. It probably doesn't help that my brother's car stalls even more because he can't afford gas so he's always driving it around on fumes. (Plus he was an idiot and put racing tires on the damned thing so it slides about whenever it rains. He's gonna be screwed if he doesn't hurry up and put snow tires on it soon.)
Tajtan
11-13-2007, 10:06 PM
Isn't all that stalling killing his transmission?
Kaoru
11-15-2007, 06:36 PM
It's not good on his clutch I can tell ya that much.
PururinEleven
11-15-2007, 09:59 PM
:/ The car's a POS to begin with. I mean, at some point it was a pretty good car, but now it's not. IMO he's a bit rough on the clutch anyways. I think my dad purposefully got him a crappy first car because he knew my brother would drive the thing like an idiot.

Round these parts a "tranny" is a transvestite, so I'm guessing that you mean motor vehicle transmissions?!
TheMischievousFox

I like automatics but mostly because I'm stuck in traffic every single day, standards really suck for that.
