A pure goddess! Her vocals are amazing! I love the song Hi no Tori (Fire Bird). The video for it was just so great!

only her recent stuff is worth listening too. she is a great diva, and i <3d her role in NANA, but my favorite japanese female singer would probably have to be Ai Otsuka.

anyone here watched the episode of Matthew's Best Hit TV featuring Mika Nakashima?

I did not know who Mika Nakashima was until Nana. I like some of her songs, but of course, "Glamorous Sky" is my favorite.

mika nakashima has ALWAYS sung pop ballads.

it wasnt until she got the roll for nana that they had to change her music style (collabed with HYDE) to suit the character Nana Komatsu featured in the manga.

Hi No Tori was a good song.

What New Orleans songs? Do you mean "Cry no More?"

As for my opinion- I like her. Any singer who is able to change her voice to fit different genres of music is talented. Mika Nakashima sounds good singing pop, rock, and even R&B. Her voice is pretty strong and she can nail some pretty difficult notes unlike many J-Pop singers. (*cough*Ayumi Hamasaki *cough*)

I want the "Love", "Music", "Sugar Cat", "True" Mika Back! I hate this NANA crap! (especially after I heard her latest album, track 11 was s**t!) Mika is not suited for rock IMO. She's awesome on Jazz; songs like "Aishiteru", "Aroma", "Love Addict" really show off her vocals.

I don't know about the other songs, but I liked Glamorous Sky from NANA. In a way, songs like that showcase her skills too. It shows that her voice is suitable to all genres. I always marveled at how Mika could sing a Jazzy, slow song like "Hino Tori" then turn around and make her voice sound raspy and hard like in "Glamorous Sky" and then sound so soulful in songs like "Cry no More."

There aren't many artists (especially J-Pop singers) who can change their voices like that.

Mika is pretty versitile, but my problem is that if she's really great in one area (which I stongly believe is Jazz) and just 'good' in another (rock), I would prefer her to stay in where she's best. Although, I think she's doing this partially because they're paying her a lot to and partially because it gives her a chance to fully explore a new genre, rather than just a track or two on an album.
Another problem this NANA mess creates are "genre-fans". You have people like me who love the Jazz-ballad Mika, and then you have people who love the NANA-Rock Mika. Now, there's nothing wrong with singing in two styles (Namie did it for a while), but sooner or later she's gonna have to sit her azz down and pick a damn genre! I will certainly not buy her CDs if half is rock and half is jazz.

Anyways, I hope she titled the album "The End" for a reason; it would piss me the hell of if this stuff continued...

Artists don't sound good immediately in all genres. You said Mika is only 'good' in the Rock genre, but if she keeps practicing she may get better. Practice makes perfect.

And I'm glad that Mika switches from genre to genre. Artists who only stick to one genre are boring, and all of their songs start sounding the same after a while.

I always say if I were an artist, then my songs would be all over the place. I'd sing Jazz, R&B, Rap, Pop, Rock, heck- maybe even some country. J-Pop, C-Pop, Reggaeton. I would never stick with one genre.

Plus you get more fans that way.

And that's exactly the problem. If she keeps releasing these so-so rock albums, when she could be releasing great Jazz styled albums like "Love" (her best album IMO) some people are not going to wait for her to improve, and she's going to lose fans. Utada is a good example of this. After she changed her style, her sales have been declining...
Genre whoring has killed many musical careers.

Genre whoring has killed many musical careers.

Sales might decline for a short time, but genre whoring still improves artistic skill and adds the element of "flexibility" to a muscian.

Actually, that may be the one good thing about Ayumi Hamasaki. She sure can't sing, but at least she switches it up constantly.

I don't know about anyone else, but a musician that sings love ballad after love ballad or feel good club song after feel good club song is not an artist. That's just trying to hit it big with the same old trick. How lazy.

I bet she was drunk while she sang that. It sounds very karaoke.... After I heard the preview on sonymusic.jp, I downloaded it on frostwire just to laugh at the whole thing (especially at 2:07 when she starts randomly cursing)....

Not really...

Genre whoring, doesn't always make you better. Look at all the artists (worldwide) who did crap like that; Pop stars who became rappers or rockers (vice-versa, etc), and horribly suck at it. The sad thing about it is that they never catch on to the fact that their music is sh_t. Instead they ignore what the charts are saying, and listen to their managers ("It's okay Vanilla Ice, a drop in sales is only temporary. You'll be back up there..." pfft!) And where are they now? Either In a big bin at the back of your local music store, marked as "clearance", or back in the genre where they belong (but often too late)...
A japanese rapper by the name of "Brier" is a victim of genre whoring (rapper to R&B, now Reggae singer). She used to spit beautiful flows, and now she's singing (whispering or screeching rather; and in her latest album, dropping whack-azz dancehall lyrics with 3-4 other chicks.) Does that make her "flexible"? Does that give her new elements? Is she improving? No. Why not? She can't sing! But since she went soft-serve on her fans, she's been dropping album after album of this crap, and either she or her record label is not realizing that she's lost her core fans.

Music is like any other business, build up on your base and achieve success before you start experimenting. Although I do not support Utada's genre change, I will admit that she did it at a right time: after she got to the top. But Mika isn't there yet.

I'm kinda tired of going around in circles...

But here it is put simply: Being able to sing different genres is a talent, as in, not everyone can do it. Some people can practice and practice, but never get good. Mika Nakashima though, has that talent. So I think it would be beneficial for her artistic skill and career if she went forward with it.

That's my opinion.

I get yours.

Can we be done with this?

I can't say that I quite agree with that...its really not fair to say that you're not an artist if you only do one genre or style.

Your argument did remind me of a discussion of CLAMP I had; we were talking about the way CLAMP keeps changing their style, how some people love it and others hate it.

True, true. It all depends on your tastes. But I get bored with artists these days...-_-
They've gotta prove themselves to me, because they are so many people with no talent calling themselves "artists" or "musicians."

I don't like Nakashima's "Yuki no Hana" either. Try "Hino Tori" it's much better.
