Sorry if this is already a thread or is posted in the wrong forum...But, why do some manga creators use pen names and what are they for?

Hiding your real identity or because your real name isn't "marketable", r you jsut don't like it. Amongst other reasons.

I have one, because all 3 of the names in my full name are completely boring and VERY common. You have no idea how many people have the same name as me. X_X Not to mention I despise it.

Well, I can't speak for other writers/artists, but I use mine to protect my real identity. I'm published, but only recently. I use pen names for numerous reasons:
I don't desire to be famous. I'm not exactly a social person. Therefore I don't need to be known by my real name. It's easier for people to track a real name than a fake name.
There are people out there, fans I guess, on the Internet who read way too much into things, and pretty much seem like they're obsessed.
I was apparently popular enough to have a rather frightening incident with a creepy, dangerous stalker guy, who was seriously jealous and obsessed with me, and tried to tell everyone what my real name was, just to make me look bad. It got pretty bad for a while there, a few years back.
So basically, I use a pen name because A) You never know who's out there, and B) For me, it's about career, not fame.

you think? a pen name is a name you've made up for yourself, either you have one or you don't.

Hmm, of various reasons and I think the most common ones are:
-do not want to get famous
-avoid stalking or related things(so usually don't have a photo of themselves or draw themselves with props like facemasks and etc).
-wants to keep personal details private
And regarding manga creators on the web, i think their main aims are pretty much similar to what everyone mentioned.
It's always advised to use an internet name or soemthing on the web to prevent any stalking or incident so i guess safety is their top priority.
Personally, using pen/internet names are really fun.XD Especially when it comes to the pronounciations. *__* haha.XD
I am no manga artist or anything but I used a pen name to want to show my love for physics(I was a physics obsessive when I created my name) but not in a geeky way.XD
one of the other reasons was that nardly anyone ever pronounces/writes my real name correctly..XD (still, doesn't my internet/pen name still has lots variations).XD

I use a Japanese name to shield myself as well, I don't like people trying into my business/life so it'd be of my best interest to use a typical JP name.
I personally use Inazaki Mikoto the most, it can be used by both boys or girls so it's funner to make people guess which I am.
I've also seen some whacky pen-names like Blue Bunny

pen name?? don't know about manga creators but for me, as a fanfiction writer, i made mine to, somehow, control myself. you know... uh... i'm too imaginative so i tend to dwell on my stories. so basically, having my own pen name is to make another person... an alter ego of some sort. using my real name is like going back to reality. :)

i agree with the "marketable" part too.. some celebrities use screen names to have that certain effect to the public.

I'm debating if I should use my username as my pen name, or if I should use my real name. My Username is special, it's a nickname from ninth grade with a bit of a story behind it. But my real name is cool sounding.
(Actually my full nickname is Skarlog Queen of Skarlog of the Galaxy Gnirf to the power of fifteen times three, but I think that's too long a name to be a penname.)
Anyways what was my point...?
I don't think I had one.

Fujikage Daiki is my pen name. I combine my friends name with the surname of a Japanese man I saw on TV. It fit the site well, even though I no longer use it. I'll use another one if I get published. If.

Pen names are silly.
I think the only reason to use one I've agreed with so far was to distance oneself from a previously published book of that tanked.

Well, I haven't been published in print by Tokyopop as of now, so I have yet to hear a rundown of the publication process. Actually, my real name appears on the AnimeTV (http://www.goanimetv.com)show's credits (shameless plug:D ) under the Reviewers listing on the episodes I contribute to but for my actual reviews they use my author pseudonym, "JM Strebler". My real first name is Bill, which I don't exactly hide, but don't advertise either, cuz the way it sometimes works in Hollywood is if I go around on the world wide web calling myself Bill everywhere, two minutes later a show will appear on NBC or some other crappy channel I don't watch with the title "The Idiotic Bill Show" or some other stupid crap like that where there's some parodic theme going on there, and I'll sit back and say "hey I got my own show, except I'm not in it in all reality, nor am I being compensated for said likeness, and they never told me they were working on it in the first place"...happens to people in entertainment all the time. Entertainment is always based on something else that they don't tell you about. Take the ultimate example, Da Vinci's Mono Lisa. It's inspired by a real person, but do we really know who Mona Lisa the person was nowadays? No. But we sure as hell know who the artist who portrayed her on the page was! I'd rather just avoid that "muse trap" altogether and not put myself in a limelight situation intentionally. I'm not about shallow publicity, so I use fake names quite a bit. To me, the muse trap is yet another reason to not use my actual name the majority of the time. But yeah, in terms of recieving legal credit for my actual real work, I have no qualms about using my real name.
And besides...Who really needs a name to be recognized. It's often pretty easy to spot me (even when i'm not using a face or name) by the length of my posts and the extensiveness (on average, around 10-20 lines long, sometimes shorter one-liners, and sometimes longer, but not usually). Much as I like to avoid it, I often do have a format. Typically, I write in paragraphs, not sentences...I'm extensive like that.

Coming up with names is just something that tends to be easy for me. I've thought up lots of names (pseudonyms, story titles), that I haven't used yet just for the fun of it. I'm a "name guy". "Spindack" is a double entendre, refering to both digital and media culture. The first definition of Spin in my name refers to the journalism media (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin_%28public_relations%29), the news (which I hate for the most part) and how they like to put spin on stories and as a result spin them out of control, when most of them don't even really matter that much, but they shove it down people's throats anyway. The second reference I make with Spin is a reference to DJs found in technologically based music genres like hip-hop and techno and trip-hop, and how instead of strumming, or hitting a drum, the DJ spins records as his form of music creation, to create a new form of music. Being a DVD author, seeing as how I use blank discs to create something new, I find something in common with the DJ, hence "spin". My background is when I was in middle school, and high school, I was a musician, a drummer in numerous local garage bands that never went anywhere. I was very inspired by 90s alterna-rock at the time. I don't know where the "dack" comes from. I just kind of made it up...

Ah, so your pen name has a meaning for you. My old pen name was a combination of my middle school nick names. Tohru had been my nickname at the time I chose it and Sakura had been my previous nickname. I added an "i" at the end of Sakura to represent meyself thus becoming my pen name: Tohru Sakurai. But I got tired of it because it didn't express me enough. I wanted a pen name that said who I really was on the inside. That's why I'm trying to come up with one that has a deep meaning for me.

I like to think Tsugumi Oba just doesn't want to be killed via a Death Note.
Anycase, my real name's popped up enough places that I can already be followed if anyone actually wanted to. So using it as a user name is just a way of identifying work at one place with work at another. Whether or not that's going to be a problem, I'll burn that bridge when I get there.
Though I do have pseudonyms to get around if I need them.

What can I say, I'm one of the starters. I tend to witness the beginning of stuff that grows on the market like crazy, for some reason. The internet may be huge and mainstream now, but I remember when the only people who read things on the web were mostly just scientists and programmers, and maybe a few other tech nerds like myself (even as currently as the year 2000), as opposed to everyday people (there wasn't much streaming video in the beginning, if any, let alone YouTube with all the anime on it.). But yeah, things like blogging and viral video where people get way too personal, is just insane. Such a bad idea, in terms of privacy.

Nah. Not to sound overdramatic or anything, but the authorities all know about that guy, and put a stop to his rather psychologically abusive and deranged ways, and locked him away a long time ago, for being a menace to society who lusted for authority, and abused whatever authority he did have. So I'm not worried about him anymore. True, people like him can make working in manga a lonely, difficult, depressing, and in some instances, even dangerous journey, (if you want to brutal honest truth about showbusiness), but achieving success overall makes it worth the pain....overall. Well, not to brag or nothing, but yes I am technically one of the best kept secrets in the industry. I'm not quite as obscure or uninfluential as I'd like to let people think I am, or as unimportant as some people like to think I am (depending on how you look at it).
For instance, one of my accomplishments is I've already written a whole book...(yes, a completed and published book) that no one knows about yet. Technically, it's much like blogs are now, except it's in print, was written before blogs were, and it's around 1,200 pages long (yes, I am secretly prolific, I already know.). It's self published and I have one of the only copies in print. I would have sold it to a New York Literary Publisher (who is not this website's publisher), and I am compiling a list of potential candidates for submitting my manuscript/copy to, but honestly, if I have my way, I'm going to pursue the manga thing first and see if that goes anywhere. If it doesn't, at least I have options.
On a scientific front, I am working on designs for a new kind of digital home entertainment system prototype, which hopefully can be applied pragmatically in some way at some point in the future, be it by myself or by someone I don't even know. Which is a patent that may or may not get bought by a tech / home entertainment company if given the chance to be seen for what it really is. Other than that, I'm researching DNA ("Deoxyribonucleic acid" as the scientific community calls it), for scientific purposes.
In terms of looking at my temperament in an astrological way, I'm a scorpio. Everyone knows how secretive scorpios are, according to what's been recorded about that sign. That might be a partial explanation to why I conduct myself the way I do online. so it's not like I'm going to spill ALL the details online. That might explain why I've been "slacking off" on my manga work. I'm overworked (I work round the clock on my own projects), exhausted, and extremely busy lately. I was never this busy when I was younger, so it is kind of shocking.
As you can probably see, my career has become abstract, just like my way of thinking and analyzing.
And "WHY go to all this trouble to conceal my identity when I could easily be considered a minor public figure?" That's easy.
I shield my real life from the public eye for the most part ot protect the people in my life. I have a 3-year old nephew who I hardly ever mention in places like this, mostly for the fact that I'd hate to see him involved in things like the iBullshit world. While in a way I did ask for this lifestyle (lowly as it may be), my family and friends didn't, and therefore I see no reason to involve my family or friends in my showbusiness pursuits. They have no clue of what's really going on, and I question whether they ever really will. It's almost like they don't WANT to acknowledge the reality of this life situation in my personal life. In other words, blurring the line between my e-life and real life would be dangerous in ways most people who know me are simply not aware of because they haven't seen what I've seen all the time. Therefore they could never understand. Those two seperate worlds of my life exist at odds with each other. They always have. One of the worst times of my life was when I witnessed those two aspects colliding more than usual. It complicated my life, to say the very least.
Last but not least, there is the contrasting perception element:
When people hear about you through the media, the have a preset way of how they think you will act in real life, just because of a photo they saw of you somewhere, or a video they saw of you somewhere. It's hard to live up to the "glamour" people like to associate with the thing they perceive to be your lifestyle. I get reactions along the line of "How can he be that well known and draw like that? How can he be so unpopular in real life and yet such a hit on the internet? How can he make such a low income, and yet still be that widely known?"
You see, fanboys and fangirls tend to get disillusioned when told the REAL brutal reality of how the media really works, when they learn about the life of someone they're a fan of, and realize "Hey, it's not as sexy nor as glamorous as I assumed it was". And even if you ARE a more traditional superstar of the industry, you'll never be on top forever. Nothing stays the most famous thing in the world forever. Everything ends up being obscure at one point. That's why it's called "pop" culture. Because it pops like a bubble...The bursted bubble of raised expectations.

First...Damn that was a lit to read!! Anyway, I spend all my free time writing, whether it be a novel or dialoguing for my manga. I draw a lot aas well. What you said was my worry because I'm a person who sometimes over analyzes, which benefits at times, at others, I just look stupid. You seem to do a lot in your life. I can only do what I can in my free time. (i'm in a crucial year in hs.) But I thought about a pen name for myself more to protect my loved ones than myself. I can deal with crap, hell it happens in school. But i wouldn't want innocent people that associate with me to become a target. I already know what I want to get into, and like you said it was your choice, this is mine. I see what the media does and it sickens me.

Thanks for responding again. Nice to know we're kind of on the same wavelength here. Sometimes I act dead serious and extremely mindful, and on other days I act rude crass, and just plain stupid, specially online.
I guess I kind of do a lot of stuff in my life afterall. I guess I never really thought about it that way before, to tell you the truth. I may or may not be well known (I'll probably never really know for certain, it's not like anyone recognizes me out in public for the most part), but that doesn't mean I'm not busy. I'm used to being around busy, intense, hard working career-driven people (family), and I think it's kind of kind of worn off on me.
Yeah. I just kind of ignore the media. Not much else I can do, in terms of what I can and cannot change.

In case this hasn't been mention already but sometimes the person's real name is just too hard to pronounce so that's when a pen name would come in handy.

Hmm...Now, I don't know any author's that use pen names.
Hm. *smiles* Some times I come up with interesting title names but no story to go with it. But like I said, I want to put some real thought into my pen name.
Natsuki Takaya aurthor of Fruits Basket uses a pen name. She mentioned what her real name was in one of the volumes, it's Naka Hatake.

Some good points there. I too would like my work to become well known but not myself, so agreed in that's when a pen name would come in handy. The thing you said about "pop" is very cleaver I've never thought about it like that. But in truth all “pop” is, is just an abbreviation for popular. But I suppose it could be used for unpopular too and would be called unpoped? I don't know.

I use a pen name when I post my drawings on various sites (except the forum). I go by Asuka Mai on DeviantArt for example. It's just that with a name like mine, it's really hard to pronounce. My first name is Mariya and my last name is Russian and from what I saw with Svet's last name, people can't pronounce it right so why should I even bother? :)
