Come on, come on, I'm sure you have heard of him? Look at Death Note and Hikaru no Go! Such detailed and thoughtful drawings. Ever stared at Light's/Hikaru's hair? O_O

If you like his art, his newest artbook is entitled "blanc et noir" (http://www.shueisha.co.jp/s-book/obata/com/)

Look out for it! ^_^

I bow down to Obata Takeshi. I have all of the Hikaru no Go mangas and all the current Death Note mangas.

And I want Blanc et Noir, arg!! T_T I was too late to pre-order the Death Box, unfortunately. Of course, just Blanc et Noir itself will undoubtedly make me very... very... financially disabled.

How absolutely true... But I'm definitely getting it! To hard to let it go!

But Blanc et Noir doesn't come out until May ;__;

Atleast we havetime to save some money... and spend it... on this LOVELY artbook!

But I'm just wondering... what is in the Death Box anyway? --;;

I'm a fan of death note...but I would rather look at the manga art than look at the art book. I suppose that makes me a rather odd one.

Not really. Actually, mangas make for good study of general drawing techniques, layout, etc. if you're into that kinda thing. For me, however, the idea of passing up an Obata artbook is horror. Oh, the horror.

Ever stared at Light's/Hikaru's hair? O_O

Yes, and now I shall stare at his hair after I post this message. *Grin.*

Seriously, though, I love Obata's art. It's a very original, recognizable style. I'm going to attempt to order Blanc et Noir if I can...

And I would get the Death Box if I could too... But mainly for the main figure it comes with.

DEATH BOX Contents (source):

- Light, L, and Misa's dorama figures
- Shinigami skull objet d'art
- Shinigami Eyeball Pendant
- Colored original art replica (6 total)
- Monochrome original art replica (6 in total)
- Obata Takeshi Art Book "Blanc et Noir" in a special case
- Original design sticker

I want a Death Box, but...
18,900 yen = 162.046 USD = nearly bankrupt Death Note Fan XD.

Thanks for the info! So it comes with the artbook too (with special case XD)... *tries to look away*
The art replica sounds interesting though, can't wait for the pictures!
162.046 USD... Gosh...

Shinigami EYEBALL pendant? --;; Okay...

Yup, manga will be a good source for referencing. However, like Shizu-san, oh, the horror... XD

The only thing I really want from the Death Box (excluding the art book, of course), is the swanky dorama figure. I have a weakness for that sort of thing.

Of course, the figure itself is probably what's pushing up the price on the friggin' thing.

Oh, I almost forgot. Obata also did the character designs in the PS2 game Yoshitsuneki. (Although I'm sure many of you out there already know that fact. But for those who don't...)

Check it out.

Thanks Lchan for the directions! Can't read japanese to save my life... >_> (<3 Hikaru no Go!) Was a little weird to see that lady with her bra showing though. --;;

The eyeball thingy looks cool and freaky at the same time! Not sure how the real thing will look... Looks heavy.

I wished the figurines could be a little more colourful like the images though. Looks a little dull... No Ryukku too.

Lol, didn't know that... Looks a little like Onimusha. I wonder if it will be in the artbook too?

They might include some Yoshitsuneki artwork, who knows? I mean, even though it doesn't fit the darker themes of Death Note (or does it? I haven't played the game), if you think about it, neither does Hikaru no Go. O_o Not by a long shot.

Besides, if Yoshitsuneki doesn't make it into Blanc Et Noir, then I'm sure it'll make it into some other artbook for us to purchase at some later date. Yay, more money to spend.

I love how he has evolved as an artist. From the first chapter of hikaru no go I knew he was special. When I first experienced his art it was back in 2002 and I was reading a few chapters that where scanned online. I read to the bitter end. I then was very happy to hear that he was moving on to bigger and better things. Lately, though, I've come to think he is in a rut. His art isn't changing as drastically as it had been in past chapters and volumes. Possibly it is turning into an inner change in himself and we will see an explosion of talent rushing towards us? I do believe that he is one of the best manga artists I've ever seen.

Nyanyan

Maybe he has evolved to the point that he can no longer evolve, or his skills are "hibernating". Like the evolution of the human race, to where we are now. (Pardon the lame analogy).

Still, his art IS one of the best out there, but come to think of it, I wonder how the art of "happy" HiKaGo turned into "dark" Death Note, if you know what I mean. There is a dash of difference, I can feel it, but not sure where it is. It just looks different... Gah.

Besides, if Yoshitsuneki doesn't make it into Blanc Et Noir, then I'm sure it'll make it into some other artbook for us to purchase at some later date. Yay, more money to spend.

Haha, that will probably be a few more years and a little lighter wallet later.

I have to spend more money, I have.
I am sad, I am.

Obata is a sweet artist, but it sucks how he likes doing pics of his characters in boring poses. That's what he said back in his HnG days, anyway.
Those were some terrible covers.

Shizu-san
03-27-2006, 03:47 PM
What, what, terrible covers?? Hm, perhaps you're not looking at the same covers as I am, chousenjin. I love both the manga and chapter covers for HnG, most especially closer to the end of the series.

Also, the fact that there was a drastic change in tone from Hikaru no Go to Death Note doesn't mean that Obata didn't have the ability to draw darkly in the beginning. He had mentioned in some interview that he enjoyed drawing more morbid things, but he never really got the chance to do that in Hikaru no Go. Never would have guessed it by looking at cheery Hikaru, now would you?

It seems that the Death Note artbook "Blanc et Noir" has been delayed to May 31st instead of early May. However, the release date for Death Box is still the same.

This means more time to save more money to buy the artbook! XD

Lol. I just realized Light and Hikaru have the same names, if you translate one of their names to the other language...

Well, Hikari, rather. :\

Oh, right! Hikari = Light. It's just that the name Light is too holy for a guy like him. Hehe.

EDIT :
I forgot to add this, got the info from a reliable site, which it's link is not so appropriate to be posted here.
According to the site,
According to Weekly Shounen Jump's early sales information, Death Note (Story by Tsugumi Ooba, Art by Takeshi Obata) will be ending in Shounen Jump issue 24, on sale May 15th.

Finally! Though it'll be sad... atleast it's ending soon, before it gets draggy.

Same here, since that's the one I really needed to save money for XD

Lol, that's the opposite of my reason. =P I can't wait to buy the artbook!

Yep, Death Note ends at Page 108. But there's still the anime, game, live action movies, and tribute album to look forward to.

Oh, yesh! Really looking forward to the movie and anime.

I wonder what would be in the tribute album? Since we have not heard any music besides Dani California for Death Note.

What will Obata Takeshi do next? Hikaru no Go second season? XD XD

Shizu-san

Yep, Death Note ends at chapter 108. I am saddened. But we will not get into that.

What extra stuff does the limited edition of Blanc Et Noir have in it, as compared to just... the normal edition?

I have read in some sites, which I forgot the link, that the diorama figurines that comes with the Death Box are not very satisfactory. Mainly the colour choice. And Misa doesn't lokk like Misa at all (to me at least).

All I know is that it has lots of pin ups.

Hm, if that's the case, then I'm glad I didn't preorder the Death Box and went with just Blanc Et Noir instead. Really, the only thing that would have tempted me to spend that kind of money on the Death Box was the snazzy diorama figure. Which, apprently, isn't as snazzy as I thought it would be.

Now I just have to wait until the end of this month before Blanc et Noir ships. [sigh]

My blanc et noir came in last night! So happy. Haven't been so excited about a book in quite a long while. All the pics are great, as I expected. Anyone else out there manage to pick this up yet?

I have the normal edition and the quality, in my opinion, is EXCELLENT. Although you probably already know that by now.

As for what Obata may be up to next... who knows? He may still be busy with all things Death Note, considering the Death Note buzz still hasn't died down yet, and there's still one more movie yet to be released. [shrug]

As a matter of fact, I haven't got it yet. --;;

Right, I forgot about the second movie. Hopefully after the Death Note hype has gone down, he'll come out with something equivalent.

I got blanc et noir the other day, great quality product at a reasonable price, highly recommended for Takeshi Obata's fans. Best arbook quality-wise I've set eyes on.

I don't know what he'll come up next, but I bet it'll be pretty good.

I saw it at Kinokuniya quite a while ago... And it costs a bomb/ an arm and a leg etc...!

So I might not be able to get it for a while, though I must say that it looks gorgeous. And it's size is quite large for an artbook. >_<

I felt the same way about Hikaru No Go until I got half way through the first volume. It's actually very kyoot!
My favorite character in it would have to be Yuki! Cute hair!:D
