View Full Version : Entering the Seventh RSOM?

I decided to start this one, even though it seems a little early to discuss it since we haven't even gotten out of the voting for the sixth RSOM. Who's going to enter the seventh RSOM? I know I am, I entered the sixth but I rushed the whole thing, so I'm going to do it the right way this time. I've got the story written down, and I've just gotta do some turn-abouts of the main character. Anyone know what Pythagoras, Christopher Columbus, Ben Franklin, and a little goth girl named Ra have in common?:p

It all depends.
I hope to have my "pop novel" pitch sent out by the first of May (May Day! Whee). After that's done, I intend to start working on my RSOM7 entry. I have two different thoughts on it, but will probably go with the comedy.
IF my pitch on the pop novel is picked up before I mail off my RSOM7 entry, I don't think I'd be eligible for the contest, so I wouldn't send it off, but would save it "for later."
And so... yeah.

Egh... I'll see how things play out for me. I'm not sending in a submission, but there are other things that might end up ruling me out of eligibility for the contest.

I really hope to enter this time around. I've been saying that ever since I saw the first book come out. Each issue makes me want to push it more and more. I am glad I have waited, because it has helped me to develop my characters more, the story and how I want to present it in the contest entry. This seventh issue I really hope to get it done. I think I will with some help from my friend. I feel strongly about it. :) Good luck to you as well.

I'm going to try. Do you have to be 18 or older to enter or are all ages accepted?

All ages are accepted, but if you're under 18 like me you gotta grab a parent to sign a form too.

*waves* Me! I'm already working on the script/sketches. I don't hold out much hope for it in light of this contests finalist (OMGSOGOOD) but I'm still gonna try ^_^
I have a question though: For those who plan on entering (or even those who don't), how many of you plan on doing it without any computer assistance? I'll be doing everything by hand, except for the lettering (which I'll print-and-paste). It's mostly because I don't have a scanner, but it's also a tastes thing.
Ambrose_Ring
03-21-2006, 06:18 PM
I might end up toning things by computer, but as of yet, I'm planning on doing it by hand. So, the lettering is the only thing that will most likely be computerized on my entry.
My plan is actually to try to create more than one entry, which I will take to my anime club and ask around to see which one is best liked. It's doubtful that I'll actually be able to follow through with this plan, but...you never know.
^_^
Good luck to everyone! It'll be fun to see how everyones' entries turn out!:p

I have a rough draft of something I've wanted to enter for the lasst couple years... I need to get it cleaned up and ready, though. Do you know when the deadline is? If I got the time, I'll get it in for this year's RSOM. My mag-op is entitled "Monochrome Man." I'll let you know when I do get it sent in; be sure to look for it!:D

I've entered three times so far, but I plan on keeping on entering. ^__^ That way, when I do get the gold (I hope), they will have noticed how much I've grown as an artist since the start! ^___^ And they'll have seen more stories by me before, so they know what to expect if they sign a deal with me. I hope. I hope hope hope. If ya'll want to see what I entered this past time, just check out my dev art link in my sig. ^__^

I would do that, too, but I have NO prior publishing experience, and that really doesn't bode well for someone trying to break into this kind of field. Look at Rikki-sama and Tavisha-sama--they worked on Invader Zim and they've had comics published nearly EVERYWHERE. I mean, Rikki-sama was even the voice of Gir! Most people who have made it with a staight-on pitch have had prior experience. I don't know if you have or not, but if you haven't like me, it's better to enter the competition instead.
I was terrified my first time--I honestly kept expecting TP to send me a letter telling me never to darken their door again. :o But now that I've entered for the third time, I think I've finally got some experience with what works and what doesn't. -_-() And I'm definitely going to watch my pages. I thumbed them all up until my eleventh page, and by then it was three days left and I still had to go to work AND school. Soooo I rushed it and it was quite obvious that I did.
This time, though, I'm starting the organization part of it before I even get the changes in the competition straight. XD Instead of thumbing the page just before I start penciling, I'm going to thumb the entire thing first. ^^; Um...I better get back to work, though, my turnabout for Ra needs a bit of work. Her left-facing three-quarter view is a little off...

Oh man, me too XD I thought they'd be all like "OMG NOES OUR EYES!! THEY BURNETH!!! Never submit to us again!!!!" I was relieved when all it was a rejection letter. And on my first entry, I didn't even bother with thumbnailing. I had a script in hand and did it straight to the page.
Not ever doing THAT again. Wasted more paper, ink and tones than I care to admit. Also never using tones again, but thats besides the point...
This time everything's being thumbnailed. In fact, I have 15 pages thumbnailed and scripted so far (though the script is going through maaaaajoor revision in light of some historical facts that, while not changing the essential plot, make me have to change some of the dialoge). When I'm done with the thumbnailing/scripting, I'll work on the characters final designs, and then a full-sized practice entry to see how the thumbnails look up to scale. It's a lot of work TT_TT But hopefully it'll look a lot better than my first entry.

XD I've already begun my thumbing stage as well. I have three characters in all for the story, though the last bit entails some additional minor characters that I'm using as just silohettes (I can't spell that to save my life XD). I actually bounced the entire story to my baby brother (my audience tends to be 13-14-15 year olds because I love young teen stories) and he made suggestions for me.
Now I've got a kung-fu penguin, a half-blind sailor girl, and a runaway rock star's kid. XDDDD The story is much more simple than it was, but at least I'll be able to fit it into the 20-page limit now. XD I showed my mother the thumbs and she was rolling on the floor (literally, she doesn't have any legs =P ). Still got a few more pages to go, but I'm calling it a night here. >< School starts back up again tomorrow (CURSE YOU, WSU, FOR YOUR SHORT SPRING BREAK!!!). I've actually done drama the past three times, so I'm going for a comedy, now. I've got a bit more character design left to do, but until then, I've got the story and half the thumbs complete.
I plan on ordering some tone. >< I tried (I really tried) to use Manga Pro, but I honestly don't trust the internet enough to buy it online as a download. I haven't the funds nor the connection speed nor the best computer anyway. ^^; I shall simply edit in my wonderful scanner program and hope for the best. If I win, though, I buying Photoshop and a new compie. XD

UK, your entry sounds very intresting! I wanna see it XD Of course, only after the contest is over :P
I've got three main characters too. Its always simpler to focus on two or three than it is to focus on, say, 4 or 5. Mine are all boys (my sister calls me sexist, I just tell her that a girl wouldn't fit in the plot right now. Not with only 20 pages T_T )
Oh man, spring break! I can't wait *hasn't had hers yet*. I'm gonna stay home, sleep all day, and draw and surf the net all night XD Possibly sew, too, but thats only if I get some cash soon.
Speaking of sleep...I have class in the morning, so I better end this here too. ^__^

Thanks so much, I really hope it does go well, too. ^__^ My favorite part so far in the thumbs is when the fish are falling from the sky on top of Tikki's head and Awk the Penguin goes kung-fu mode and starts chopping them away from Tikki. XD Of course, nobody but the readers see it, as Ra is at the time helping Tikki get loose from an outboard motor pulling him out to sea. ^^; My characters are a boy and a girl and a penguin. I still haven't decided on a hair style for Tikki, the boy, yet. He's supposed to have been on the island for three months with intermittent visits from a friend (a minor charrie, only shows his face the last three pages or so).
That's what I did for Spring Break, all right! Stayed up allllll night on the compie and slept all day. XD And cleaned my room and did 13 loads of laundry in a single day...and helped mom...and got new candles cause my old ones were all waxed out...^^; Mostly, worked on manga. Yup. Good ole Spring Break. ^__^

OMG FISH XD That sounds so funny! I wanna see! You'll definatly have to share after the contest (that is, if you don't make it in, but I'll be rooting for you! ^_^).
OMG spirng break! I am SOOOO excited. A whole 9 days to catch up on everything I am so far behind in. I have to finish all my costuming homework, catch up on english, finish my rsom thumbnails so I can go through and edit the script and do some final desins for the charries, start thumbnailing the pages for my own webcomic, get my hair cut (short! omg! It's scary, but I feel like a change) AND finish the design for the harems t-shirt so I can get it scanned at the copy place, fixed up in photoshop, and sent over to be printed.
@_@ soooo busssyyy *cries*
I'll probably just slack off and finish only hal of that. Homework, Shirt design, and RSoM are the top of my list. How do you plan on doing your entry, by the way. Usuing a mix of computers and traditional, all computer, or all traditional?

^__^ It's even funnier, cause it's almost like it's Ra's fault...^^; Almost, but not quite. But I'm gonna make it in! This time, it really feels like I'll get it! Ohhhh....I hope I hope I hope I hooooope...XD Of course, it's up to the poor editors at TP...O.O
A good question for the editors, I wonder if I should ask in the board.
How many RSoM entries do they gotta go through!? I mean, I'm thinkin' in the thousands myself. But someone said that a good majority of them go straight to the trash (Or into the ed's private collection of misfits) because of stupid things like not following the guidelines and such. I almost feel sorry for the editors at TP during the last few weeks of the RSoM contest, having to go through all of the last-minute entries.

Ehhhh...Homework, schomework, work on your manga! XP lol The hair cut thing, though, is weird, because I got my hair cut short during SB, too! O_O The last time I had it this short was when I was BORN. XD T-shirt projects are such fun...^_^ I made a nine-tailed fox anthropomorph and put it on a t-shirt a while ago. I still get comments sometimes from people wanting to know where I bought my shirt. ^^''

My entry is going to be mostly traditional, except for toning and maybe some black fill-in. I don't have a tablet, and Manga Pro 3.0 doesn't seem like the program to do inking in, anyway. I'm getting it tomorroooooow :D

I wanna know too! I always wondered how many. I don't know about thousands: I bet a lot of people start an RSoM project, but they take a while to finish, so I bet a lot of them don't ever send them in because they never finish. My guess has always been around 1,000-1,500 at the most. a cookie for whoevers closest!

lol XD This'll be my first short haircut in 8 years. It scares me @_@ XD and the T-shirt is for my FMA cosplay/obsession group ^_^ So hopefully quite a few will be wearing them. O_O LUCKY!!! I sooooo want that program T____T All my manga stuff is done traditionally, though I usually CG line art when I can. But I rarely use PS for comics anymore; I did before, but it was too much work and not enough satisfaction like I get from traditional work.

I used PS for some of my entry into the last RSoM, but I really hated how it ended up. I've been messing around with my BRAND-NEW Manga Pro 3.0, and it's just beautiful. I could cry! T_T But won't. ^_^ I fronted the 50 bucks for the Debut program. If I really find it as wonderful as it has been so far, I'll get the upgrade disc, hopefully for my b-day.
If you're curious about my work, and about my characters for the seventh RSoM, check out my Share Manga thread. (http://messageboard.tokyopop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1512) ^_^ I'll be trying to post more up there later on.

Has anyone seen the way they're awarding prizes this time? I was super surprised that they're doing it by genre this time... And the people's choice is going to become the overall best now?
It has me a little worried... =/
Klawzie

Well, look at how people in another thread were complaining that comedic entries had a better shot at winning/placing. Now we'll have the opportunity to see what happens when comedies aren't competing with dramas/horror/etc. Right?
Also look at how they're spreading "the love" (ie: money) around a little. That'll keep aspiring manga-kas in Microns and Copics until they can pitch a full-length series to Tokyopop, hey? Or perhaps fund some art college classes. Or maybe pay for a lifetime supply of bubblegum! Awesome. :)
And if it doesn't work out quite how they hoped, there's always next time, right?
I'm so pleased at the length of time we're getting for this next competition! I'll know for sure by then (either by being contacted or being suspiciously NOT contacted - hee!) whether my pitch to Tokyopop was accepted, so I'll not worry about sending out my RSOM7 entry and have it cluttering up the editors' desks. :3

I'm sure this question will come up, so let me answer it before anyone asks. Tokyopop lists ALL of the rules, tips, and guidelines (these being very important, as I've heard rumors that if you don't follow the rules, your entry gets tossed in the trash T_T ). Those rules and such can be found HERE (http://www.tokyopop.com/news/mangatalent/intro.php).
I'm sort of worried about the new way they're going about it now, too...oh, dear...O-O;; I wouldn't really classify my manga as ANY of those genre. T_T...I mean, it's a little on the humorous side, but it's not really dedicated to it. And it's not really a drama...okay, maybe drama. Romance? Romantic-comedy-drama. O.o Yeah, that about describes it. ^^;
But I agree with Klawzie on this point: You get more for the prize if you win. Plus, your entry won't be competing against other genre-oriented entries, though multiple-genre entries like mine...O__O I'm not so sure about that. I'm still waiting on the rules to open up to see if we have to choose just one of the genre or if it can be multiple genre, or if the editors will simply decide that for you. I'll edit my post when I find out.
Edit and Quote: "You may indicate on the Competition Entry Form the genre or genres in which you are
submitting your entry; however, TOKYOPOP’s panel of judges will make the final
determination and, in its discretion, may reassign your entry to one or more genres."

I think you put it down for both categories, and if the judges decide they like it enough to win, they pick whichever one it fits into best.
I'm a little worried about the format this time round too. While it will be nice to not be compeating with comidies for top spot, what happens if you have three very worthy mangas that ALL deserve a place in RSoM, but two lose their spots because the category they fit in is filled up? Or what if most of the entries for one category are pretty sub-par, but the spot needs to be filled anyways, and other, deserving entries can't take its place because they don't fit?
I think TPop would have been better off keeping these guidelines (you know, one for each category) to themselves, so that they would have a little more flexibility in their judging, yet still try and be as fair to each genre as possible.
That said, I'm both glad and a little aprehensive about all the time alloted for getting things done. My plan is to get it done and sent by august or September, since I'll be moving around then. But if I do that, then if I win, they won't be able to contact me. *sighs* I'll probably just have to wait and send it after the move, but those are always so hectic that I'm worried something might get damaged or lost on the way ;_; What a deliema *sighs again*

It's interesting how TOKYOPOP never seems to win. When there's no specific genre competitions, people complain about how biased toward comedies or ninjas or ferrets or nontraditionalmangastyles the competition is. They toss up those new rules with category winners and immediately people are apprehensive. I don't think anything short of an EVERYBODY WINS! JUST SEND IN A MANGA AND YOU WIN! kind of contest is gonna make everybody happy.
This is the seventh contest. They're most likely looking for a way to shake things up to see what the results are. Giving people genres to shoot for will make some people more focused. There'll also be more of a balanced book this way. Or should be, anyway.

I think this shakeup is gonna be great! I'm so excited I can barely contain myself while I print out all the information.
As for my idea...Sore wa himitsu desu! ^_^ xD
Murasakivie
04-01-2006, 07:59 AM
Did they really change it because of some complaints from the forum? Because I think that was more of a battle of comedy vs. serious than comedy vs. every other genre.
Anyways, the shake-up is scaring me much right now. Because it's not just about getting into the book and being 3rd or 7th best... It's about being the best in one catagory. Don't get me wrong; I want the best entries to win because that's what's fair. But for people like me who'd rather just get the recognition of being in the book rather than having the glory of numero uno, it's a bit frightening.
But all that's nine months from now... Someone could get pregnant and have the kid by the deadline! And write a comic about it?!

Finally the time for entering again in a RSOM has come... since I was not even in the 20 first for the RSOM4 I decided to train hard everyday, I left my friends, my girlfriend, sports, everything! in order to be the perfect Shojo Maker, now with my skills and help from MS EX 3.0 (curve tool I love you *-*) xD finally I can reach my dream to become a Mangaka (please God at least I gotta be in the 20 first this time >.<!).
Now with the categories I have even more oportunities *-* Finally Shojo will be away from other categories xD.

sorry one more question....
rules...
2.1 Write and illustrate a manga that:
-is your original creation (or the original creation of only you and others who jointly make the entry with you)
-has never been published or publicly displayed anywhere...
SO does that mean any work we've displayed on this (TP public Board)
say in the Share your Manga thread...
Is not eligible for submission?
Klawzie
04-02-2006, 03:53 PM
I'm not sure if they'd disqualify it if you just showed off one page. (They might. So don't rely on this being true.) And I reallyreally don't think if you just showed character designs or posted a basic synopsis, they'd mind.
But if you showed off all 20 pages before you found out if you placed or not (in January), yeah. :3

That's what I was worried about, too. So what I decided to do was go ahead with Lost Souls now and use it for practice (Manga Studio is turning out harder than I thought it would be >< ). And I've got a second story in the mills that will be a bit more serious, and I'll be pitching the tale straight into the drama competition.

This came up on the Pseudome Forums couple of contests back (when they first instituted the online voting) and the reply from the editors was:
Please do NOT post your entire work online. A few pages (around 3) should be fine, as long as it is largely incomplete. Because of legal reasons please exercise caution and tell your friends to do so as well, so that you will not be disqualified. Do not try and stretch the rules, please. I suggest trying to get critiques from people around you rather than putting it up in a public forum, which could disqualify you.
So there ya go! ;)

i'm going to try to enter this time.....i'm a little intmidated by the fact that some people might not like it.
but i might as well try....i mean i won major compitions on art and computer skills and illistrations....so i might win something....
but you never know until you try....right.
i'll try to come up with something for the compition.....but we'll see if i get it done in time between school and life being evil to me....

Now with the categories I have even more oportunities *-* Finally Shojo will be away from other categories xD.
Yeah! Now each genre will get to shine individually!
I'm still young, so I probably don't have a chance, but experience is the best teacher. :)

I don't think anything short of an EVERYBODY WINS! JUST SEND IN A MANGA AND YOU WIN! kind of contest is gonna make everybody happy.
Actually, if this scenario ever happened people will then just complain, "Everyone's a winner, how will I know how good I am if everyone wins? That's not a competition!"
There's always something to complain about. (unfortunate) :)

Me and some others on another forum all plan to try and enter. I'm not really all that great with my skills, but I already know that I'm not going to win, I guess. This is practice for me meeting a deadline, and also for sequential work. I have a lot of problems in making people seem to static, and I really need to work on action scenes, so this is a great oppurtunity for me to push my skills to the limit, even if I've got a definite chance of losing. :)

I'm mostly planning to enter, although it's not likely I'll win. It is a first time, and I'm 14, so I still have a lot to learn, especially anatomy.
And yes, avenge "Rain or Shine!" It's not like I've read it, or even glanced at a single picture from it, but alas...

I’ve got a question for anybody who has entered RSOM multiple times: do you use the same characters each time, or do you go in a different direction with every entry?
I’ve always wondered if others stuck with their favorites, or liked to switch gears. My four RSOM attempts have all used different sets of characters, and haven’t been connected in any way.
KaYoKitten
04-20-2006, 11:24 PM
I've entered three times, and for every time, I've used a different set of characters and different story type. Of course, I've also grown tremendously as an artist and a writer with every entry-period that passed, so that was to be expected. I glanced back at my first entry a few days ago and just about died laughing. XD I had tried to cram an entire epic fantasy into the 25 page allotment of RSOM 1. And believe me, it did not work. And it especially didn't work that the characters looked nothing alike from panel to panel.

*has just now found this forum*
I was thinking about entering the last one, but I had decided that it would take too long for someone like me to make a short manga before the deadline. SO I waited for this one. But now I'm having second thoughts. Should I wait for the 8th? Or 9th even? I mean, do you think that a 13-year-old would be able to make a manga worthy enouh of a prize?

-_-() Sweet-cakes, age is just a number. Erisu-san has made that point pretty clear. ^^; If you have a story, and you've completed it, enter. Period. Do not doubt that you can't make it until you try. Ask some friends for help--ask the artists who are trying to enter from here for critique. I've been drawing for six years and I've just now gotten to the point where I believe I can make a manga that might be worthy of an RSOM win--but I've been entering the contest since the first. Why? Because it's practice--it has a deadline--and it's a challenge.
Amecka-Mudd
04-24-2006, 04:23 AM
Thanks. I guess that I should wait for the 8th then. I have a story brewing, but my mind seems to have put it on pause. It may take a bit to wake it up, ne?
KaYoKitten
04-24-2006, 04:31 AM
O_o You DO know that the deadline isn't until JANUARY 2007, right? You got time, cakes. You got time. And just because it's put on hold doesn't mean you can't work on it. If I've got characters stirring around in my head and a basic idea for a story, I start workin' on getting those characters' kinks worked out. And the story always follows when you actively work with the characters.
Amecka-Mudd
04-24-2006, 01:14 PM
Yeah, your right. You know what? Writer's block sucks. >.< that's probably the main reason I can't seem to think of anything for it...
Wait! An idea just popped into my head! Since I can't really draw guys that well, how about I do a random manga about two girls who try to figure out why there aren't any men in their world? Do you think that would make an ok entry?
KaYoKitten
04-24-2006, 09:03 PM
^__^ Take it and run!! Run Run Run! LOL, I've had two stories that have popped in my head: One about a girl who ends up on Bermuda Triangle Island and can't escape because of the waterspouts surrounding it and the second about a small child who somehow sneaks into a storm chaser's truck. XD I'm still considering doing the storm chaser one...it's so funny sounding to me.
Amecka-Mudd
04-24-2006, 09:19 PM
Maybe you could do a combination of both?
KaYoKitten
04-24-2006, 09:31 PM
O.O Now that would get just waaaaaay too complicated for a single, 20-page story. We've only got 20 pages! And I tend to aim for the lower integer, this being 15. So I plan with 15, knowing that I'll prolly need the 20 anyway. XD

04-25-2006, 02:25 AM
i was planning on entering but my characters are lacking any dept or likeablity, i think. Do these sound like good character designs or bases for designs
The pretty boy personification of death
the human daughter of the devil
The lazy grandson of the grim reaper
and
sarcastic penguin with fangs
Klawzie
04-25-2006, 03:18 AM
Well, other than the penguin, they've all been done. (Actually, the penguin probably has too - I just haven't seen a lot of stuff with penguins.) And the first two have been done a lot. However, it's not what the character type is, it's what you do with them that elevates them (or doesn't) above the rest.
Amecka-Mudd
04-25-2006, 02:45 PM
I do think the penguin has been done. I'm sure I saw it somewhere...
Hm...well, maybe I should wait a little bit for my art to improve and enterthe 8th?
TheBohemian
04-25-2006, 03:27 PM
You could... But how will you know if you're good enough next year? The best way to find out is to enter. Even if you lose, you really LOSE nothing but time.
And the sense of accomplishment when you send it out FAR outweighs that loss. Just put all your doubts aside and draw. Whether you're actively trying to or not, you'll be learning as you go, and if it doesn't pan out, it doesn't pan out. But that'd be better than constantly second-guessing yourself.
Amecka-Mudd
04-25-2006, 03:37 PM
Okay, then...I guess I could shoot for it...one more question: If I start now, do you think I could do about 17 or 18 pages before the deadline? Especially when I don't even have a scanner or inking tools?
TheBohemian
04-25-2006, 03:42 PM
At this point, you could do two pages a MONTH and still make the deadline!;)
Just gotta keep calm and focused. Ok, a little too much energy is great if you can put it in your lines. :D
Do you ink by hand or not?
Amecka-Mudd
04-25-2006, 03:48 PM
Yeah, I ink by hand. With a fountain pen. XP I'd like some Staedtler pigment ink fineliners, but I don't have the money. T_T
TheBohemian
04-25-2006, 03:55 PM
AcK!!Sorry, but I have some issues with Staedtler...
Micron, on the other hand...:o
Ummm....I'm probably gonna regret asking this, but am I the only one who still uses nibs??
Amecka-Mudd
04-25-2006, 04:06 PM
Nah, I know a few people.
Heh. I've also had issues with Staedtler, but that was with some pens of theirs that are very old...
So, I'll shoot for it if I'm able to get some inking tools. If not, I'll wait for next year. (I'm also looking forward to a tablet, scanner, and Manga Studio, but I doubt I'll get those...)

Heh, it's a scam. You shouldn't believe poetry.com at all.
No, back on subject. I came up with an idea for an entry, thanks to a friend of mine. Think about this:
There's a group called Kitty Lickers Anonymous, where middle-aged men who haven't had a date in twenty years and girls with surgically implanted kitty ears and tails go to confess about their obsessions with cats. Two teenage girls, Ange and Kera, run the group, having given it that name themselves. There's a reason it's called Kitty Lickers. It's Ange and Kera's job to cure these people, and what better way is there than grossing them out? While Ange gives the cat a tongue bath, Kera provides an explanation of all the things that make cats gross and evil.
Do you think its just a bit too gross? Or funny?
TheBohemian
04-27-2006, 01:03 AM
Hey!! Leave a man his pipe dreams!:p
It SOUNDS pretty gross (especially if you've ever experienced coughing up a hairball--no comment), but also a good potential comedy. I really do hope to see it... ;)

EDIT: Okay, scratch that idea. (I'll save it for later though...) A friend of mine and I are going to enter a manga we've been planning for a while. It'll be called Cereal Killers. When cereal turns into evil chibis, who do you think will get rid of them? Roy, the Cereal Killer! With the help of Caine (based off of moi ;) ), he fights the evil race of the Chibi-O's, the pocky-stealing cereal that turns into chibis when mixed with milk.

This is off-topic, but this place has enough threads already without me making another just to ask one dumb question. The rules say:
17. Entrants are also required to write the following information on the front of EACH of their manga pages:
Their name, or names (in the case of a group submission), phone number(s), and title of the manga
And:
Question: Am I supposed to put anything on the backside of my submitted manga pages?
Answer: No. The following information, however, should appear on the front of each one of your manga pages: Your name (or names, if you're submitting as a group), phone number(s), and the title of the manga you're submitting.
Do they mean on one side of the page is the manga, on the other your name? Plus. do they mean type or write? Does it matter? I ish confuzzled..
Getting back ON topic, I don't think I can enter the contest, unless I have my Dad send in the manga for me from America, since I'm in Egypt. I don't even know if can do that, so chances are I won't be entering.

The front of your page is the side that has manga on it. Your name and other info should go on the front along with the manga art. Nothing should go on the back.
I doubt they care whether the information is typed or handwritten, as long as it is legible and there.

That would work. They don't specify where on the front you need to put the name & information, so you could techinically put it anywhere on the page, though obviously you wouldn't want it to compromise your artwork.

So to enter this year it has to be under a certain category, huh? That makes it pretty hard.. what if you're a mix? I know you'd have to pick the category most suitable, but it's still hard. The story I was thinking of doesn't really fall into any categpry..
Good luck to anyone who decides to enter!!

You choose -as many categories as you think it needs-, as stated on the entry form. You don't have to worry about "most suitable" or "one that'll get fewest entries" or anything- just make your story and if it fits into a lot, then check off a lot. If the judges think you miss-categorized it or forgot one or two, they'll fix it for you.

Kewl.. I'll make a romance-fantasy-action-horror-dramedy. 'Twill be fun :D
I was wondering though.. if I sent my manga through my father (who is in the US, I'm not) would that work? I'd love to enter but I'll need to find a loophole since I'm not currently in the US. :D Help me find loopholes!!
Klawzie
05-09-2006, 11:57 AM
I don't think you're going to find a loophole to exploit. I think after six contests (not including the UK edition) their lawyers would have sewn up pretty much every access point that could get them into trouble.
headmistress
05-09-2006, 01:43 PM
YamPuff - I suggest that you specifically explain your particular situation to an editor, and get an official answer, and then abide by it. If you can't enter because you are not a legal US resident, there is nothing that keeps you from working on manga or pitching a story idea to TP. Not being able to enter this one contest is not going to destroy your chance at breaking into the manga industry. Trying to sneak around the rules and getting caught out, though, will alost certainly do more harm than good.

The new format kind of screws up my battle plan, but I guess it would make sense to enter again since I got into the top 20 last round.
